Review: Williams Symphony Console Digital Piano

March 13th, 2008 | Digital Pianos/Keyboards

There seem to be two camps of piano players- those who love synthesizers and those who love acoustic pianos.

The line of digital pianos are a good mix between the two and are appealing to more and more players these days. Essentially, you are buying a purely digital piano which allows for a song sounds and future upgrades, but housed inside a purely acoustic looking and feeling piano.

One of the things I look for in a good digital piano is the feel of the keys themselves. Not all weighted keys are created equally and I am happy to say that Williams Symphony Console Digital Piano does not disappoint.

First, this piano costs around $700 bucks. That's extremely affordable compared to others in the market or even synth prices. The console is crafted out of quality wood stained with a deep and dark oak finish. This piano is definitely an attractive piece for any home.

It includes a keycover, 3 soft floor pedals, and various connections on the reverse side. Williams Genuine Hammer-feel keys, as I said above, really make this keyboard fun to play. Close your eyes while playing and you cannot tell that you are not on an acoustic piano.

Williams gave us a decent number of velocity samples as well (4 velocities for each key). For people not familiar with this, different velocities on a digital instrument allow your playing to become realistically dynamic as the strength of your playing will be reflected. This monster includes 138 different voices. Try doing that with your acoustic piano. I was pretty pleased with the sounds included.

The acoustic samples sound fairly convincing while some of the purely synth sounds were fairly useful. The quality of these sounds are great buy I find that a dedicated synth keyboard allows for richer sounds and more control over settings. Again, the Williams Console is designed to emulate the feel of an acoustic instrument more than anything.

Obviously, since the most highly used sound is likely the piano voice, Williams made sure it was good- it sounds awesome. You will also find a 3 track/ 4 song sequencer for recording of your compositions. Operation of that feature is self explanatory and fun to use. On-board effects include reverb and chorus, both decent in quality but nothing too special, I would stick to rack gear options if you plan on adding effects for recording.

Overall an awesome digital piano that has been a pure joy to play on.
