First Look Review: Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder

March 12th, 2008 | Digital/Multi-track Recording

Ron Ganella

I wanted to take a look at the new Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder today. The official specs of this item seem promising enough.

Featuring built in memory of 2 gigs, USB connectivity, and rechargeable AAA nickel-hydrogen battery capable of providing 19 hours of MP3 recording to its 2GB of internal memory. I was impressed by the fact that plugging in the Pocketrak into your computer via USB actually charges the on board battery.

Very convenient. Another creative and extremely useful feature of this device is an on-board speaker in addition to a headphone jack, making it a handy portable music player that supports MP3 and WMA files with DRM10 support. More realistically, I would use the speaker to play back field recordings without having to grab or lug around heavy ass headphones everywhere you go.

The Pocketrak 2G recorder ships with USB extension cable, stereo earphones, a leather carrying case, a stand adapter, and Cubase AI-an "Advanced Integration" version of Steinberg's recording workstation software.

Overall it seems like Yamaha has done their homework. When I get my hands on the actual recorder I will do my standard audio testing and post the results on this blog.

Those eager to buy this will have to wait it out a little longer- The Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder does not ship until April 30, 2008.
