Apple has finally announced their SDK for both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
At a meeting with press on Thursday, March 6, 2008, Apple showcased a wide assortment of tools for developers to start authoring original programs for these incredible mobile devices. Apple has decided to incorporate Microsoft Exchange networks into the iPhone. For anyone unfamiliar with what this is, Microsoft Exchange is the network used by corporate outfits who rely heavily on Blackberrys and prefer Exchange because it updates emails, spreadsheets, and other documents on the fly with multiple users.
Next, Apple introduced us to a little sampling of what the actual developer software looks like, complete with automatic debugging, an iPhone emulation program for testing your programs, and a glimpse into the elegant operating system of the iPhone. What was most impressive to me was the display of games on the mobile device. Both Electronic Arts and Sega demoed some of their games on the device. These games such as Spore and Super Monkey Ball will take FULL advantage of the iPhone's accelerometer allowing for almost Wii-like playability! The quality of Super Monkey Ball's graphics gave me a glimpse of the actual power of the iPhone, which has OpenGL support (meaning 3D graphics will look great). The frame-rate of these games was around 30 FPS and looked stunning.
All applications will be found through iTunes new App Store section. Many programs will be free and some will be available for purchase. Apple has done it again and is making the iPhone the most advanced mobile computer in history. My opinion is that with these additions Apple will finally convince business men to drop their clunky Blackberry's and grab a sleek iPhone.
I am excited for the future of the iPhone with Apple. Of course I am looking for 3G network compatibility and even larger storage capacity, not to mention beefy processing power.
