Why No Movie Rentals on iPod Touch iTunes Store?

February 1st, 2008 | Apple

Yes, we know this is a music site. However, I can't help but notice that Apple has gone out of it's way to create devices with EXTREMELY AWESOME SCREENS complete with either WiFi or EDGE network and there is still no way to download your favorite TV or movie on the WiFi iTunes store.

My guess is that Apple probably wants to wait a few more months at least to roll these features out, as we see them do with a lot of new product releases. First of all, the storage size of both the iPod Touch, and especially the iPhone (16 and 8 gigs) do not lend themselves well to full movie downloads. However, TV downloads would work fairly well since their overally size is usually in the range of 200-300 megs.

Apple may also have been concerned that the download times for these files would turn users off. What doesn't make sense is that both the iPod Touch and iTunes have streaming capabilities and that technology could be applied to the downloading of television or full movies.

In my opinion Apple is losing some serious cash by not implementing video downloads over their WiFi iTunes store. It is really in their best interest (and mine) to roll out these features as soon as possible.

As a side note, I am really upset that the iTunes WiFi store does not have a Podcast section. Apple is really slapping the hardcore early adopters in the face with this move. Basically, these podcasts provide hundreds of hours of content for free. Apple may initially want sell music only in order to emphasize the paid features.

On the other hand, I cannot see how Apple would cleanly organize or display these podcasts on the iPhone or iPod Touch at this time. I think the programmers are hard at work on this one.
