Why I Hate Guitar Hero…

January 6th, 2008 | Video Games

Ron Ganella

I have an Xbox 360 and want nothing to do with the game Guitar Hero III. I'll preface this by saying that I have only played the game for about 20 minutes at a Best Buy store.

First, I have been playing the real electric guitar for about 12 years and love it. I figured that this game would in no way be a serious attempt to emulate playing, but I never expected it to frustrate me as much as it did.

For a guitar player, this game is like nails on a chalk board. I am used to being able to create the sounds I hear from records. I am used to being able to solo and perform notes at will. Guitar Hero forced me to place a Mattel quality guitar around my neck and kick my ego in the balls very hard. I am used to being considered a pretty good guitarist (at least my mom tells me so), but not being able to perform these notes in the game almost made me smash the plastic guitar into the 12 year old kid next to me. Guitar Hero may be a great game, but my theory is that if you already know how to play guitar, this thing will seriously piss you off.

The second thing that irked me about the game was the timing of the picking of notes and the video movement were not 100% synced up. At the very least, I was expecting that Guitar Hero would instill some rhythm into even non-players. I am realistic though. I know for many people Guitar Hero is an enjoyable experience. Being able to control the notes and "play" classic rock songs is an amazing feeling. I just feel fortunate to be able to do it on a real six stringed instrument. So basically, Guitar Hero III pissed me off way too much. Let me know if anyone out there feels the same.

Shut the hell up and quit whining because you suck at a game. You can play a real guitar, we get it, hooray for you. You suck at guitar hero. Quit saying it’s the game’s fault and not your own. Anyone with any decent amount of skill can effortlessly bang out the notes to the songs, just not people with mallet hands like yourself.

Oh, and there’s a calibration option, tard. Might wanna try calibrating it for HD lag on that shiny Best-Buy plasma.

Zetec, you have no ide what your talking about. He;s not blaming the game. I play guitar as well and once you play guitar, guitar hero will be a waste of time. I can actually play the songs from the game, not just pushing buttons to make the game do somthing that it’s programmed to do. It’s like listening to a stereo while pressing buttons. You have no idea the satisfaction you get from really playing a guitar. Really the whole concept of the game drives me mad. I think it will make people give up playing real music and just start playing some game. This game has no place in the hands of a true guitarist. It’s highly overrated. Enough said.

I hate Guitar Hero because when I’m searching for guitar-related news items for my guitar blog using the keyword “guitar”, about 95% of the results are all about that stupid game these days.

That and the fact that I hate all computer games.

I find it interesting that out of all (or at least most) of the rhythm game series, Guitar Hero is the only one that gets a lot of flak from people who play the actual instrument. You never see choreographers get bent out of shape over Dance Dance Revolution. You don’t see DJs whinge about Beatmania. You know why? Because they know that DDR and Beatmania ARE VIDEO GAMES with only tangential ties to what they’re based on. NEWSFLASH FOR THE DULL: PLAYING AN ELECTRIC GUITAR WELL AND PLAYING GUITAR HERO WELL REQUIRE YOU TO HONE DIFFERENT SKILLS. Shocking, I know. Also, Kingsword9, that is TOTALLY what is going to happen. There will never be another kid who experiences the orgasmic joy of rocking out because of a video game, OH SHIT :O. Back on topic, you mentioned that missing the notes made you want to bludgeon a child with the controller. Gee, no shit? We ALL sucked at first. Get over yourself.

You freaking infants and your knee-jerk reactions.

  5. zetec Says:

Wow, that’s one of the best responses to this sort of childish whining about Guitar Hero I’ve read yet. Suineder is my new best friend. The rest of you can eat hippo placenta.

  6. Benziel Says:

Well I have to agree with you on some part, Im a novice guitarist with 1 year’s worth of 3-5 hour daily practice. I agree with you that playing that plastic “guitar” is quite annoying if you play real guitar and I know its quite hatefull that you haveareally limited control over the strings, but i guess its a pretty nice game, well I pretty much suck on hard, but it has its pro’s and con’s, BUT! it still doesnt compare a F@#@ to playing a real guitar andmaking your ownriffs N stuff.

***What really PISSES!! me off is someone who think they can play real guitar just because they can complete “through thefire and flames” REAL GUITAR IS NOTHING COMPARED TO THIS GAME!

  7. Benziel Says:

Yeah I have to agree with Suineder completely on this one…

Guitar Hero - Somebody has to say something….

So I’ve obviously been digging around the internet for other music blogs, stuff that relates to me. And this guy’s blog, I wish I could find the authors name, is one that I’ve been digging through lately…

I actually agree with almost everything…

  10. slaysh Says:

I personally, have no real guitar skills what so ever .. but I do kick ass at guitar hero.
I think it’s kind of ridiculous how worked up people get about a video game, it’s just a game. Someone that I work with tried to win an argument about it by saying “it’s stupid.. the time you spend being good at the game, you could pick up a real guitar and actually learn to play” .. as that may be true, I have no interest in actually playing a guitar and going with that theory you could say that for any video game
IE: why play need4speed when you could go be a race car driver, or why play grand theft auto when you could just join a gang and kill people?
The game itself is just that .. A GAME.
& you may think that the rhythm and everything is off .. play on expert ; the harder the setting, the more accurate game play is.
Spend more than 20 minutes in a store on the game, and you may find that you like it .. either that or stop complaining because you suck

  11. Vdakota Says:

    Ok, here’s the deal.
I love guitar hero and all of it’s spin-offs, but I have lots of friends who hate it. Why, you ask? For many of the same reasons already mentioned — it detracts from a real guitar, players think they can really play, blah blah blah.
You are all forgetting one thing — it’s a game. A simulation.
It’s like saying Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur detract from real martial arts, and the latest Madden detracts from actual NFL Football. Guitar Hero is not meant to make people think they can be real musicians, and it is certainly not a substitute for being a real band. It’s just a fun little escape from reality — like all games (unless you really think you are a master sniper because you can beat SOCOM) — that a lot of people enjoy.
    Jesus Christ, lighten up, people

  12. Rob Says:

Everybody misses the point on why real guitarists get pissed off about guitar hero. The reason they get pissed off is because of the people who say guitar hero is harder than real guitar. I have played guitar for 12 years now and can play mostly anything. Within 10 minutes of playing guitar hero I was beating it on hard. It took me atleast 10 years of dedicated PRACTICE to get to the point where I could play basically anything. I dare someone with no actual guitar skill to sit down for 10 minutes and learn a difficult song. They would be lucky to learn how to press down the strings hard enough for it not to sound like shit when they pick the strings. Guitar is so much harder than guitar hero, I can’t believe people are ignorant enough to even compare the two. Real guitar is like chess, guitar hero is like checkers…..no wonder every country hates us.

  13. Vdakota Says:

Okay, Rob, I do see your point but I think you are missing mine. Anybody who tries to compare playing a real guitar with playing a video game is obviously delusional — do you think that because you rushed for 200 yards a game in Madden means you can take LT’s job with the Chargers? Because you can beat Virtua Fighter 5 on expert means that you can kick Chuck Liddell’s ass in a real fight? I love Guitar Hero and have no desire to play a real guitar because I am a gamer playing a game. It is very important that you understand that sentence. Playing a real guitar is definitely cool, though. I think every country hates us because we are such a judgemental society that spends an inordinate amount of time talking about how stupid the other guy is (Anyone see a pattern). Oh well, I’m off to try to beat One on GH 3 with my trusty bottle of Yukon Jack — the more I drink the worse I play, hmmm.

    Late

  14. Rob Says:

That’s fine, I love gaming too. Guitar hero is definitely fun and I would never have said anything if it weren’t for the ignorant people that DO compare the two. Yes we are a very judgemental society, but many people aren’t like that, and just because I get mad at someone who is ignorant enough to say that, doesn’t put me into that group. I am not saying they are stupid, just completely ignorant.

  15. Joey Says:

    Guitar hero is for fags.
