Apple has been secretly working on a tablet device which will ramp off the wild success of the iPhone/iPod Touch but expands this to a larger and more dedicated device, says the Wall Street Journal. Essentially, the device will be a larger multi touch tablet with enough horsepower to run programs and applications which are desktop quality.
Some potential problems that exist with a device like this is 1) price point, 2) sex appeal. Basically, Apple needs to keep the price on this device low enough to lure in those whho are interested in a Netbook but want to spend less than a full fledged notebook. Thus, I predict Apple, who is in the market of selling upper class items, will market their tablet device likely in the $599 to $699 range. Any lower and the device will not appear a luxury item, any higher and a consumer is likely to buy a Macbook instead. As for sex appeal, a oversized iPhone looking giant screen device may actually look and handle clunky. I just don't see Apple designing something that ugly. Therefore, I think Apple will go to great lengths to make the tablet look much different than an oversized iPod Touch. Perhaps a different color finish, different overall shape, and different button layouts will help this. That being said Apple finally needs to give this device enough horsepower to differentiate it from the power of the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch. So expect 2 gigs of ram, a fast processor, and long lasting battery life.
Apple is known for redefining genre's. So far the Tablet market is filled with crappy looking thick plastic glorified notebook computers that nobody wants to touch. Apple will once again redefine what a tablet can be by taking the above into consideration. This device could be the ultra portable computer we all have been waiting for.
