One of the most popular and effective distortion pedals in the business - the Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal is no stranger to the Rock scene. It retails for only $39 bucks and attempts to pack a monstrous punch into your guitar sound. I prefer this pedal for varying my tone in a live setting and primarily rhythm parts. It is also used for solo lead crunch but personally I think I like it for cutting rhythm sections.
Knobs include Tobe, Level, and Distortion. This no frills setup gives you plenty if options. Also, the device us practically bullet proof. I have had mine for years and believe you me, mine may smell like old beer but it still works like a charm.
