One of the nice things about the advent of computer driven recording solutions is the fact that you can score a pretty decent stand alone multi track recorder these days for nearly dirt cheap.
Take for example the Tascam DP-02 Multi Track recorder. This comes in a few flavors (40 Gig internal HD or 16 Gig Compact Flash Memory). They range in price from only $299-499 and provide some good features for someone looking to record live music or has just started in on multi track recording. On the back end you will find two studio quality mics present with phantom power and an EQ Frequency button to access high and low EQ shelf frequencies. Add on the built-in chromatic tuner, CD-RW burner, USB 2.0 interface for transfers and internal metronome and you'll know why I say that at this price you cannot go wrong.
If you are looking to go even cheaper, buy a used DP-02 on Ebay and you can score something for under $200 dollars. Again, a few years ago it was not uncommon for Roland Top End VS Workstations to be selling upwards of $1000.00 or more for less features than the DP-02 has. Check into this.
