There are a ton of drum machines on the market, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
The Boss Dr. Rhythm series of drum machines has been there from the very beginning. With the DR-3 Boss has added even more features into their famous drum machine. Essentially, I have been demoing this device for the past few weeks and find that it is a pretty good drum machine. It comes with plenty of backing sounds to explore for hours on end and sounds high quality.
I have spent countless hours getting a good backing track (I like the blues riffs the best) and practicing solos over them. I find that this method of using the DR-3 allows for the best practice I can get. I liked the preloaded beats on this system but also experimented with making some of my own, and the process was not that hard and I came up with some pretty good sounds.
I think that some variety to the beats is needed however. At times it is very clear that these beats are sampled. I think future models of Dr. Rhythm should include randomization of samples (other higher end machines have this) in order to keep the beats sounding more realistic.
All in all, this thing sound better than a cheap sounding keyboard with a drum section but pales in comparison to software based drum solutions (Check out Drum Kit From Hell from ToonTrack) which sound much more authentic and vary the samples. I think that for a beginner or someone who just wants a practice companion, the Dr. Rhythm DR-3 does an excellent job and will satisfy you.
