I am a huge fan of Boss as well as Roland (the first 8 track digital recorder I ever bought was the Roland VS 880). Back in those days the VS had a "high capacity" hard drive topping out at 550 mega bytes!
The much more sophisticated Boss BR-600 costs around $400 dollars and provide a pretty decent value for your money. That being said, I would suggest only buying a standalone digital recorder if you plan on doing live recordings where a computer is too bulky to go. Otherwise, you are better off spending your hard earned cash on a hardware/ software solution ( such as Mbox with Protolls LE) where editing and improving your sounds is incredibly easier. I think these recorders made more sense when computers powerful enough to record with did not yet exist.
This recorder does some Amazing hints though- instead of a permanent hard drive the BR 600 uses much improved compact flash cards which do allow for easy transfer of your raw audio to your desktop. I was extremely disappointed that the BR-600 included a paltry 128 mg flash card. That would be fine if we were Baku in 1998. That amount of storage is unacceptable so go out and buy at least a 1 gig card for this recorder.
It allows simultaneous recording of 8 tracks, had plenty of COSM based effects made famous by Boss. All in all, check out the official specs below and keep in mind that a computer based solution I'd a better choice unless you are looking to do portable recording as the BR 600 can even operate on 6 AA batteries! All in all another quality item from Boss.
