iPod Touch January Update - When Will Apple Allow 3rd Party Apps?

January 27th, 2008 | Apple

There is no doubt that Apple has clearly enhanced the iPod Touch with their January release (for $20) which adds some major functionality to their device.

If you read my review from last week of it you will find that it turns the iPod touch into a much more useful device which allows you to compose emails and notes offline and mail them as soon as you have a WiFi connection. This is huge.

The next question on my mind is 3rd party applications. Apple has been vocal about releasing a 3rd party SDK in February of 2008. However, when should we expect this and what limitations will the kit have? Obviously, I think that some developers will try to modify the iPod touch into a VOIP device through software and hardware modifications- my guess is look for apple to try and work around this somehow.

Personally, I cannot wait until these 3rd party applications emerge. It seems that the iPod Touch has enough horse power to provide a good platform for a multitude of impressive third party applications. I would love to see a dedicated word processing program that can save and export/email Word documents, complete full rich formatting. Next, be sure to look for a host of video game emulation programs (hells yeah).

Let's face it, Apple's web applications for iPhone and iPod touch are essentially useless because of the limitations of the Safari browser. Plus, especially for the iPod Touch, when offline, they are impossible to use. Hopefully Apple will get the SDK out as soon as possible so the functionality of both the iPhone and iPod Touch will continue growing!
