Simple, elegant, and effective. The Boss TR-2 Tremolo has been my main Tremolo pedal for over 3 years of live shows. I find that a good tremolo pedal can warm up your sound and create lots of movement in your rhythm playing. The TR-2 is a solid performer but lacks an abundance of features.
As far as knobs, the TR-2 has controls for Rate, Wave, and Depth. The rate switch controls the speed of the tremolo, while the depth and wave knobs set the overall thickness and shape of your sound. You can select Square or Triangle sound patterns, which adjusts frequency (review continued below...)
Ok so these guys are speaking a different language, but this video does a great job showing off the smoothness of the Boss TR-2. He even puts it head to head against one of it's competitors:
What I like about this pedal is that it has a very analogue sound to the effect. Far too many tremolo pedals end up sounding thin, cold, and underwhelming. While the TR-2 does have excellent sound quality and legendary durability from Boss, you won't find many features on this pedal. I say this having used this pedal in every live performance for the past 3 years.
Some future additions to this pedal that would make it even better would be 1) preset and customization storing 2) tremolo amp modeling (such as tube vs analogue). If you are looking for a no frills tremolo pedal, the Boss TR-2 may be your ticket. If you are interested in something more exotic, tube driven, or with more features, you may be better off looking elsewhere, such as the Guyatone VTX Tremolo Pedal, which boasts some of the lushest tremolo on earth. Happy playing!
